HOLIDAY GREETINGS!It's difficult to believe, but the fall semester is coming to a close. Students are busy finishing up class assignments and preparing for finals week. This is a time of relief as well as anxiety as final class requirements are completed. The successful completion of a college semester, whether a student's first semester or last semester, is a milestone to be celebrated. Based on a report by the Education Trust, approximately two thirds of all high school graduates attend college. Of these students, only 4 in 10 graduate in four years and almost 6 in 10 will graduate in six years. Students who do not finish their college degree are responsible for re-paying any loans they may have borrowed and, without their degree, are locked out of the more financially rewarding employment opportunities. Families play a vital role in a student deciding to stay in college. -Encourage your student when s/he lacks confidence in his/her abilities. -Help your student find the resources s/he needs to succeed in classes. -Be supportive of your student's intellectual and social development. Students with strong support systems made up of family, friends, faculty, and staff are more likely to be successful in college. Strong support systems provide students with the strength to go on when things are difficult and the confidence necessary for success. As I look to the new year, I look forward to engaging families in the Western community and helping our students be successful. The best of the holidays to everyone! Shawna C.
